John Gamble Dance Theater

John Gamble Dance Theater will present six new dance works as part of “On The Edge,” a concert produced by the Greensboro Fringe Festival at the City Arts Studio Theater on January 31-February 2, 2008.  The Studio Theater is located on the ground floor of the Cultural Arts Center at 200 North Davie Street.  Performances will be on Thursday, January 31 at 6:00 PM, Friday, February 1 at 8:00 PM, and Saturday, February 2 at 2:00 PM.  Tickets are $10.00.  Choreographers include Heather Glasgow Doyle, John Gamble, Rachel Grant, Jennifer McNure, Ashlee Ramsey, and Cory Stephenson.

“Changeant d'Habit de Sexe” is French for transvestite.  This dance, choreographed by John Gamble, explores the erotic overtones suggested by cross-dressing.  Music is by Belgian cabaret singer Jacques Brel, who was very popular in France in the late 1960’s.  Dancers are Virginia Freeman Dupont, Andrea Long, Jennifer McNure, Renee O’Conner, Cory Stephenson, Robin Spohr, and Natasha Williams.

A new untitled dance is a work of collaborative choreography that responds to the range of tones, textures, and friction created through all sorts of collaborative relationships: relationships between strangers, between voyeurs and spectacles, between lovers, friends, and seeming enemies. The piece is structured in three parts and set to music by Portishead.  Dancers and choreographers are Jennifer McNure, Cory Stephenson, and Ashlee Ramsey.

"Tethered" is a physical exploration of how time and proximity can create a magnetic and sometimes explosive dynamic between two performers.  Choreography is by Jennifer McNure, movement and performance is by Kindal Blattner-Buterin and Jennifer McNure, and music is by Beth Orton and Hope for Agoldensummer.

“The Other Rachel” is a playful duet for two women that asks the question, "What's in a name?"  Danced by two Rachels, Rachel Brown and Rachel Grant, the piece is shaped by each dancer's interpretation, through movement, of her name's personal significance.  The dance features music by Carla Bruni and Josh Ritter.

Ashlee Ramsey is re-staging a piece she choreographed in 2004 titled “I Can See the Sea.” This dance describes the emotions of two people as they face and contemplate the mysterious depths and tides of the sea.  “I Can See the Sea” will be performed by Ashlee Ramsey and Jonathan Yeatts.

In a new piece for four women, choreographer Heather Glasgow Doyle and composer Braxton Sherouse create a softly focused environment where the performers quietly flesh out movement narratives.  Distinctive voices and striking images emerge from subtle and seemingly random interactions.  "spoken for"  is a meditation on the murkiness encountered on the road from intention to decision, and the lingering ambiguities that result from choice.  Dancers are Lauren Drake, Rachel Grant, Robin Spohr and Lauren Wilson.
