
The New Fringe
Milanda McGinnis is currently exploring a more lyrical approach to contemporary West African dance, attempting to seamlessly blend Modern and West African. She feels that this piece is inspired by harmony in nature and finding beauty in simplicity. Miss McGinnis would like to embody the 'dreamlike state" experienced through the music. Since relocating to Greensboro she has founded the Black Choreographers Collective as well as performed her works through ShackleFre3 Dance Productions. She will be debuting a piece highlighting her eclectic style of contemporary modern and West African dance.
Madeleine Reber's Precipice, Portal, is her choreographic premiere in The Greensboro Fringe Festival. Moving onto and off of a tilted table, the duet portrays an intimate relationship within a precarious context. Negotiating the incline, the dancers explore the risk, vulnerability, and exhilaration of falling in and out of balance.
Sidelong Dance Company will perform Three Caprices. The dance is an idiosyncratic movement narrative in three parts choreographed by Karla Finger Coghill and set to music by Niccolo Paganini. Three Caprices is a visual representation of an individual's thought process as it becomes interrupted, then conflicted and finally scattered. www.sidelongdance.org
Viscera Dance Theatre will present "Suites for the (bitter)Sweet" at the Fringe Festival in Greensboro, NC on January 28, 2009. Viscera Dance Theatre is a multi-media performance art company from Charlotte, NC whose work focuses on issues surrounding gender, desire, identity, and the violent ways in which these facets of sexuality collide. Excerpts from a suite of dances inspired by five of the ways in which relationships sour will be performed as part of a roster featuring state-wide talent.
Blank Slate Dance - Choreographed by Heather Pike in collaboration with the dancers, "All that Gravity" is set to the music of the band M83 and combines elements of both modern and ballet techniques. The concept of personal loss and the weight it brings to life are explored through musicality and movement. Dancers are Leigh Allen, Carly Cusick, Jill Bradley Hall, Erica Locke, Heather Rose, and Lauren Trollinger. www.blankslatedance.com
Christine Bowen Stevens the struggle for ebullience is based on ideas of corruption, addiction, and desperation. The dance is set to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." The audience witnesses each dancer's personal struggle, their sense of desperation and desire, as well as their subsequent exhaustion.
