On the Edge
By the John Gamble Dance Theater
John Gamble Dance Theater, voted Go Triad's best dance company, will present nine choreographers in three performances of "On The Edge" at the 8th Annual Greensboro Fringe Festival January 28-January 30, 2010.
Each program will feature six new works by JGDT company members. Thursday's program, January 28 at 6:00 PM, will feature Elizabeth Lane, Stephanie Leathers, Katherine Kiefer Stark, Megan Wilson Stern, Cory Stephenson, and Sara Ruth Tourek. Friday's program, January 29 at 8:00 PM, will feature Amy Love Beasley, Emily Brenner, Elizabeth Lane, Jennifer McNure, Katherine Kiefer Stark, and Megan Wilson Stern. Saturday's program, January 30 at 2:00 PM, will feature Amy Love Beasley, Emily Brenner, Jennifer McNure, Stephanie Leathers, Cory Stephenson, and Sara Ruth Tourek.
Jennifer McNure's "No Caveats" is a dance in three sections which explores the intrapersonal dialogue of losing, missing, and waiting through the use of projected images, exploration of a physical environment, and subtle, if even detectible, movement choices. Part of the choreographer's goal for this work is that it be presented in chapters - interspersed among the works of others. Over an evening, it is the collective impact of the images, music, and movement that the choreographer seeks to explore and have the audience experience.
"Unfolding Steps," a dance choreographed and performed by Elizabeth Lane, was birthed through a
poem and the intention to explore through movement a spiritual truth about life and the process of uncovering one's ultimate potential and finding enlightenment. The dance includes ballet vocabulary joined with contemporary movements and choreographic techniques.
"Redirect: Circle" is collaboration between Emily Brenner and Lisa Woods, faculty at Weaver Academy, in Dance & Visual Arts respectively, and is a Dance for the Camera project. The work explores creation, birth, & rebirth and manipulates traditional symbols for birth and regeneration. As such, the circle and the spiral became central motifs for both the movement and the images. As the film progressed, these symbols became a metaphor for the human condition.
"A Series of Non-Sequiturs from Left to Right," choreographed by Katherine Kiefer Stark, is a series of vignettes that travel from audience left to right that explore efficiency in the way we approach our daily routines and our relationships.
Stephanie Leather's "wait. go." is a continuous stream of motion and absence woven together. Drifting in and out of movement and space, the dancers explore delay, awareness, and unity.
Megan Stern's untitled piece is a duet in three sections. It uses kinesthetic curiosity and elements of improvisation to explore the extremes and in betweens of connectivity, isolation, and physicality. The upbeat third section is an exercise in exaggeration.
Cory Stephenson's "Sketch" uses music by Djorolen of Oumou Sangare and will be danced by Amy Beasley, Robin Spohr, and Cory Stephenson.
Amy Love Beasley will present a new solo entitled "1/3." One section of a three part series, this work also includes an installation created by Beasley to further explore parameters and negotiations.
